The lines between different smoking pieces are blurring, thanks to the creativity of smokers and bong manufacturers around the globe. You may prefer a bong, a water pipe, a dry pipe, bubblers or hookahs but you would have good reasons to support your choice in comparison with other pieces. For example, hookah aka shisha smokers are after that fruity flavor of the smoke. In fact, you can use many different flavors to smoke a shisha, which had been something distinct about it initially, but not anymore.

Bong smokers are loyal fellows. They are not likely to find a replacement for their bong and why would they? They can fit in all kinds of cool additional customizations into them, such as extra percolators for added diffusion, ice pinch to cool the smoke, splash guard to keep dirty bong water from reaching your mouth, or an ash catcher which prevents ash from the bowl to be inhaled by you. But, snobby shisha smokers could always rub their ability to smoke from a variety of flavors from their piece, in your face. This is not cool!

Bong smokers, you can reinvent your conventional smoking experience by replacing the boring, plain, mostly dirty water with other alternatives! That’s right. You can add a touch of flavor to your bong and smoke it just as well.

What You Should Never Add To Your Bong

First things first. While getting a little experimental with bong water alternatives is an endeavor that’s worth a try, you must be aware of all the don’ts first. Do not add anything containing fat, such as milk, because it will absorb all the lipophillic compounds from the smoke and take away all the fun out of smoking - leaving you sitting there wondering if you feel any different at all.

Don’t get too bold with your bong water choices and turn to alcohol because clearly, hot smoke and alcohol are not a safe combination, to say the least. Plus, the pungent alcohol fumes will surely overpower the taste of the smoke anyway - not that it would’ve been okay to add it, had it not been the case.

You should also steer clear of any drinks that have very high sugar content because, unless you are going to be strict about regular bong cleaning (which most of us aren’t, if we get real), all that sugar clinging to the walls of your bong is an invitation for bacterial colonies to breed and incubate. Hence, the result will be a super stinky bong that is un-smokable and undesirable.

Let’s Get to the Exciting Bong Water Alternatives Now!

Ice Water

Even though you might have already tried out filling your bong column with ice cubes, it’s still worth a mention. Adding chilled water to your bong can make for very refreshing, crisp hits and is an easy way to add a twist to the boring old water.

All you have to do is grab some cold water from the refrigerator and maybe some ice cubes. If you haven’t tried this yet, the cold smoke will take you aback. You might want to throw in some mint leaves for a nicer taste and classy look.

Hot tea

You can get real exotic with your bong by adding hot tea right off the pot. You can use flavored teas like lemon, orange and other zesty variations. The hot tea can also give you smooth rips and soothe out your nasopharyngeal passage, but it may also feel harsh to some. Hot tea may be an acquired taste and can take a few gos to get used to. You don’t have to go by the book on this and can use ice tea as well! Maybe those of you finding hits from hot tea harsh might like the ice tea better. Your personal pallet plays an important role as well. Also, do not add sugar to the tea!

Cranberry juice

Cranberry juice is amongst the all time favorite bong alternatives all over. Cranberry juice is very effective in its ability to alter the taste of smoke for the better. You will most definitely taste some of that cranberry in every rip and, if you add ice cold cranberry juice, you’re in for a treat.

It has also been speculated that due to the acidity in cranberry juice, it can help your bong stay cleaner for long by preventing bacterial growth. If you’re sick of cleaning your bong frequently, give cranberry juice a try.

Lemon & Orange Peels

You can add a touch of citrus fruits to your bong by adding orange or lemon peels to your bong water. To maximize flavor extraction, you can just grate the top layer of the skin without grating the white pith because that’ll add some bitterness to the flavor. The grated peel will increase the surface area for greater extraction of flavors from the peel.

Also, since both of these fruits are citrus, the citric acid in them can help fight off the bacteria that has been stinking up your bong. Some even boil the peels in water for a while before adding the mixture into the bong. Be liberal with the amount of peel, if you want to enhance its flavor.

Gatorade

Yes, this is a sugary drink and it will stink up your bong sooner than you might anticipate. But, who doesn’t like to try out different colors every once in a while. Unlike popular belief, you won’t get the electrolytic goodness of Gatorade in you by smoking through it, but it can add faint flavor of itself to the smoke. You can be liberal with the Gatorade flavors available, maybe even mix more than one flavors together, if it is to your liking.

Gatorade also makes for a great choice, especially for house parties or other special occasions that require a bit of flair and color to the usual. It’s probably not a good idea to use Gatorade as a bong water alterative for regular use though, because you must clean your bong thoroughly after each time you use it. This is why it is better off for special events only, to spice up your transparent glass bong with vibrant colors.
